Web Store Q&A's

I shopped at Waxman in the 90’s and LOVED Jazzberry scent – can I still get it?

Yes. Give us a call, we’d love to chat about the nostalgia induced by your favorite scent and get a special order started!

I saw a product at your physical location that I am not finding online – can I order it?

Yes! Please give us a call, we are happy to take your order over the phone.

Why am I not seeing the discounted standard votive price reflected in my cart?

The votive discount will apply to your cart when you reach 12+ units of the same votive product. If you have 8 votives from the Standard Votive – Top 40 collection and 4 votives from the Standard Votive – Winter Fragrance Collection the discount will not apply since those are two separate products.

Votive products are based on a fragrance theme. Customers can explore a curated list of 20–40 scents under a theme, rather than scrolling through and overwhelming list of 150+ options. Our e-commerce system doesn’t allow discounts to combine across separate products. We hope it will be possible in the future!

Why are online prices slightly higher than in your store?

A downside to being a business in a university town means many of our customers eventually move away, and we want to be able to remain part of their lives wherever they go. That makes having a website that supports e-commerce essential. Operating a full-service site is a significant investment that comes with ongoing monthly and annual costs, which add to the already substantial expenses of running our physical location. We truly understand how challenging rising costs have become for everyone. Material and operating expenses — both in-store and online — continue to climb, but we work hard to absorb as much of that increase as we can before adjusting prices. The continued support of customers like you has kept Waxman going strong for over 55 years, and we’re deeply grateful for that.

Candle Q&A's

What type of wax does Waxman use?
  • PARAFFIN: U.S.A fully refined paraffin wax is a highly purified, petroleum-derived wax that undergoes processing to remove impurities, color, and odor.
  • SOY WAX: sourced from American Soy Organic’s.
  • BEESWAX: sourced from small U.S. farms. Rendered in-house with no fragrance or color added.
Does Waxman use lead-free wicks?

Yes! We use lead-free braided cotton and lead-free paper core wicks.

Does Waxman use essential oils?

We use premium candle fragrance oils, which are a carefully crafted blend of synthetic and essential oils. While essential oils are wonderful for many applications, they are not ideal for candle making. On their own, they tend to produce very little scent when heated and can also degrade or change fragrance at higher temperatures. Using blended fragrance oils allows us to create candles with a stronger, more consistent scent experience.

What’s the deal with Waxman’s single, double, and triple strength?

It refers to the amount of fragrance oil we use per one pound of wax…

  • Single = 10mL fragrance per 1lb of wax
  • Double = 20mL fragrance per 1lb of wax
  • Triple = 30mL fragrance per 1lb of wax
Does soy wax really have a better scent throw than paraffin wax?

No. Any candle with a larger wax pool will naturally produce a stronger scent throw than one with a smaller melt pool. While soy wax doesn’t inherently throw more fragrance, it does have a lower melting point than paraffin or beeswax, allowing it to form a wax pool more quickly.

How do Waxman fragrance candles compare to big-box store candles?

Scent is unique to everyone. A scent that is attractive to one individual may offend another. The same applies to scent strength. Big-box store candles have big powerful scents that will throw themselves around even while not actively burning. Waxman candles have more subtle scents that will smell their strongest while the candle is actively burning.

Will Waxman fill a vessel I didn’t purchase from them?

Yes! Check out the Custom Fill sections of our Services page for details.

Does Waxman re-fill container candles they sell?

Yes! Check out the Waxman Candle Re-fills and Waxman Ceramic Re-fills sections of our Services page for details.

Can Waxman custom make a candle for me?

Yes! Check out the Custom Pour chart section of our Services page for details.

What is the difference between a container candle and a column candle?

The short answer is the melting point of the wax. A container candle requires wax with a low melting point that will allow the entire top layer of the candle to liquify quickly. A column candle requires a higher melting point wax that allows the candle to hold its shape as it burns.

What makes a taper candle smokeless and dripless?

A smokeless and dripless taper requires the appropriate wick size to taper diameter. The wick must consume the appropriate amount of fuel as it burns. A wick that is too large for its wax pool will smoke. A wick that is too small for its wax pool will drip.

Why is my candle tunneling?

Allowing a candle to burn the appropriate length of time is key!

  • A container candle needs to burn long enough so that the entire top layer liquifies, reaching the edges, before blowing out.
  • A column candle needs to burn a minimum of 1 hour per inch in diameter. Example: Allow a 3″ x 3″ column to burn for a minimum of 3 hours each time it is lit.
Why did my column candle gutter?

Guttering can happen when a column candle is burned inside of a container that doesn’t allow for proper air circulation.

  • A two inch or larger gap around the candle in a hurricane style holder is recommended.
  • Keep the wick centered and trimmed to ¼”.
Why isn't my candle burning evenly?

If you’ve kept the wick centered, trimmed to ¼” and rotated your candle and it’s still burning unevenly the next step is to check for those sneaky drafts. High-traffic areas, fans, air vents and windows can all be culprits.

Do I really need to remove the metal wick tab before burning another votive?

YES! The metal wick tab must be removed before burning another votive in the same container. Burning a new votive on top of an old wick tab can cause an uneven burn potentially resulting in major damage to the container or worse.

How do I remove left over wax from a container candle?

To easily remove leftover wax, place the cooled container in the freezer. The cold causes the wax to shrink, allowing it to pop out along with the metal wick tab. Use a dull butter knife to gently remove any remaining residue.
